Aston Villa fans poke fun at Leeds United over failed Kalvin Phillips transfer bid

Aston Villa picked up an impressive Premier League victory at the weekend, defeating the injury-struck Norwich City 5-1 at Carrow Road. The result was fully deserved for Aston Villa and plenty of their new summer signings thrived in the game.

Two of those were Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz. Nakamba started the game and provided an excellent foil for the likes of Jack Grealish and John McGinn to roam free in Norfolk.

Luiz came on for Conor Hourihane late in the game, but still managed to curl in what is becoming something of a trademark long-range finish.

The performance of their summer midfield recruits also had Aston Villa poking fun at a team they beat to Championship promotion last season.

Aston Villa came through the play-offs, whilst Leeds United lost in the semi-finals against Derby County last season.

It left Leeds vulnerable to Premier League interest in their star players, as seen with Tottenham’s signing of Jack Clarke.

Aston Villa also wanted Leeds midfield maestro Kalvin Phillips. As reported by Leeds Live, Aston Villa had a bid of around £25 million rejected by Leeds for the player, who is seen as a future Elland Road legend.

Aston Villa fans were likely gutted by the failure to sign Phillips, who was one of the Championship’s best performing players last season.

However, the business they did instead must be commended. As reported by The Telegraph, Aston Villa spent £11 million on Nakamba and £15 million on Luiz this summer, a combined total of £26 million.

Considering the way both have started life at Villa Park, plenty of fans took to Twitter over the weekend to suggest they were now glad the club didn’t spend all their money on the Leeds United hero.
