Aston Villa fans impressed with Matt Targett after Watford win

Aston Villa supporters were left delighted on Tuesday night as the club snatched all three points against Watford at Villa Park.

Second-half goals from Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings cancelled out Troy Deeney’s strike for the Hornets, and the result has lifted Villa out of the relegation zone.

It was a hugely important result for the Midlands club, against a resurgent side who had been unbeaten in their last seven matches.

Speaking afterwards, a pleased Dean Smith said (BBC Sport): “I thought it was a good performance. We dominated the first half and were unfortunate to go a goal down as they scored with their first attack.”

Lots of eyes were on Pepe Reina, who was making his debut for the club and return to Premier League action.

But one man who really caught the eye for the hosts was full-back Matt Targett, who was featuring as a left wing-back with Smith opting to utilise three central defenders.

The £11.5 million summer signing from Southampton (Express & Star) had a great second-half in particular, and really impressed going forwards and, arguably, he looks better suited to the position than as a standard left-back.

Perhaps his final ball needs improving slightly, but the signs were there that Villa could have a top player on their hands.

Villa fans react

Targett definitely made a big impression against Watford, with several Villa supporters suggesting it was his best display since joining the club:
