John McGinn played 79 minutes in Scotland’s Nations League fixture on Friday night – and some Aston Villa fans that tuned it gave him big credit for his international performance.
Steve Clarke’s Scotland recorded a 1-1 draw at home to Israel, with Ryan Christie’s first-half penalty cancelled out by a stunning goal from Eran Zahavi after the break.
McGinn earned his 22nd Scotland cap on Friday by starting in the draw and made his impact by earning the penalty that was dispatched by Celtic’s Christie into the top corner.
McGinn occupied from a wide right role cutting into his favoured left-foot, but he’s a box-to-box central midfielder by trade and he’s usually a big influence on his club side.
The 25-year-old Villa man helped Dean Smith’s side stay in the Premier League season, albeit he missed a couple of months midway through the campaign with an ankle injury.
He was instrumental in the early stages of last season with his constant energy and attacking drive from the centre of the park, something he showed last night for the Scots.

A selection of Villa supporters on social media were impressed by their midfielder’s performance for Scotland and would love him to carry that form into the new upcoming season.
Here are some Villa fans discussing the international display of McGinn:
