Aston Villa fans hail penalty hero Steer after his two saves help book Wembley berth

Aston Villa will contest the Championship play-off final on 27th May after coming through a tense encounter with West Brom on penalties last night.

Craig Dawson’s goal won the match 1-o for the home side after 120 minutes, but the 2-1 victory Villa secured on Saturday ensured the match went to a shoot-out.

Villa were the dominant side in terms of possession but lacked speed and invention, even after Chris Brunt’s red card killed West Brom as an attacking threat.

That meant that Jed Steer, having been twitchy with the ball at his feet early during the second half – when West Brom were at their best – was a spectator for much of the latter stages.

But he came up trumps as soon as he was called into action during the shootout, saving from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi, the Baggies’ first and second penalties.

That helped Villa get over the line 4-3 from the spot, in front of their travelling fans, and completed a turnaround for a player who was at Charlton earlier on this season before being recalled from loan.

The supporters took to Twitter to hail him after last night’s heroics and we’ve put together the best of the reaction…
