Aston Villa are into the Championship play-off final for the second consecutive season after beating West Brom on penalties at the Hawthorns last night.
Craig Dawson’s goal from a long throw-in during the first half levelled the aggregate scores at 2-2 after Villa won out 2-1 on Saturday, and the Baggies had their visitors rattled at times.
Early in the second half, Villa’s passing from the back was wayward, but they stuck to their task and eventually the home side tired and sat back, just as they did in the first leg.
Chris Brunt’s mindless red card for two silly yellow card challenges ended West Brom’s attacking threat, leaving Villa to batter away at the home defence for the remainder of the match and entirety of extra time.

And while the Villans were unable to find a goal to level on the night and win the tie, they held their nerve far better than WBA on penalties, where the home side finishing the game with a team of youngsters and defenders killed them from the spot.
Tyrone Mings didn’t take a penalty but has helped tighten up the Villa defence since his January loan arrival from Bournemouth and the supporters absolutely adore him…
