Aston Villa have confirmed the release of eight players – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have voiced their frustration that Glenn Whelan has exited the club.

The Midlands giants confirmed (official website) that the 35-year-old is one of the players to be release.

Mile Jedinak, Alan Hutton, Tommy Elphick, Albert Adomah, Ritchie De Laet, Mark Bunn and Micah Richards are the others players to depart.

Villa boss Dean Smith is now turning his attention to next season, where his team will be back in the Premier League.

They were promoted via the Championship play-offs and it looks like there will be a reshuffle in the squad.

A selection of Villa fans on social media are somewhat shocked by the release of midfielder Whelan and feel it could be a mistake.

The 35-year-old central midfielder is clearly reaching the latter stages of his career, but played an important role in the promotion campaign.

He made 38 appearances across all competitions and was useful in protecting the defence.

The Irishman will now become a free agent this summer and it will be intriguing to see if anyone snaps him up.
