Aston Villa suffered a 2-0 defeat to West Brom in the Championship – and many of their supporters on Twitter singled out midfielder Conor Hourihane for major criticism for his contribution.
Dean Smith’s side suffered another setback in the league, as West Brom earned three points thanks to late first-half goals from Hal Robson-Kanu and Jay Rodriguez.
They are now without a victory in four league games and a late charge towards the play-offs seems slim right now.
Villa travel to Stoke City next weekend in the league and desperately need points to try close the seven-point gap to the top six.
A selection of Villa fans decided to aim frustration towards Hourihane for his display and he was substituted off the pitch after 61 minutes.
The 28-year-old central midfielder is an ever-present in the starting XI and has scored five goals plus supplied nine assists all season.
But he wasn’t at the races against West Brom and offered very little in the centre of the park, with his lack of physicality an issue for him.
He’s become a target for the club’s fans in recent weeks for some inconsistent displays and the weekend was the final straw with some of them.
Here are some of the Villa fans criticising Hourihane and there were several hoping for him to be axed from the starting XI:
Yes Hourihane has a wand of a left foot, but he is so lightweight and bottles too many 50/50’s. The latter has become far more of a regular characteristic than the former #avfc

Hourihane has a good set piece on him that is it, he’s a passenger every single game #AVFC

Hourihane getting worse every week ….

Hourihane performs best when dropped. Keep him benched for a few weeks, his motivation will come back & he will contribute. At the moment he is flat.

What a shocking 60 mins from Hourihane. I’m usually a fan as he gets a decent amount of goals and assists from set peices but he was atrocious today. One of worst CM performances I’ve ever seen #avfc

Hourihane is pointless. #AVFC

Hourihane needs dropping in the form he is in….even if that means a change of formation. I still think he could be an asset again for us but right now, he’s a liability ? #avfc
