Aston Villa gave themselves a huge chance of avoiding relegation by producing a stunning defensive display to keep out Arsenal and win 1-0 at Villa Park on Tuesday night – and Villa fans have heaped praise on Ezri Konsa.
Villa came into the match with the knowledge that Watford had been completely obliterated by Manchester City 4-0, meaning a win for Villa would take them out of the drop zone on goal difference.
They did, though, face an Arsenal side that came into the match after securing wins over Liverpool in the league and a triumph over Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final. On paper, Arsenal were strong favourites.
But no-one told Trezeguet. Arsenal failed to defend a corner in the 27th minute and it went all the way through to the Egyptian winger – who hammered a stunning effort into the back of the net, leaving Emi Martinez no chance.
It meant Villa had the chance of climbing out of the drop zone, and a stunning effort from both Konsa and Tyrone Mings kept the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at bay.
Konsa, who cost Villa £12million (Goal) last summer, was on the end of numerous crosses – making tackle after tackle and blocking efforts. He was a lion at the back – and Villa supporters were overjoyed by his efforts.
