Aston Villa booked their spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals by beating Liverpool on Tuesday night – but some of the club’s supporters on Twitter were furious with the performance of defender Neil Taylor.

Villa managed to earn a 5-0 victory at home in the quarter-finals, but were major favourites considering Liverpool were without their first-team squad.

Jurgen Klopp is away with his senior group for the Club World Cup in Qatar this week, which meant that Liverpool’s Under-23s coach Neil Critchley had to lead an inexperienced group in midweek at Villa Park.

Dean Smith’s side were 2-0 in front within the opening 20 minutes following a free-kick from Conor Hourihane plus an unfortunate own goal by Morgan Boyes.

Forwards Jonathan Kodjia (two) and Wesley Moraes also got on the scoresheet to complete a routine win.

But the fixtures wasn’t without a few scares, as Liverpool’s youngsters gave a great account of themselves and should have lead the game after applying some brilliant early pressure.

Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland was on hand to help Villa avoid a major upset, but it was a totally one-sided affair like the scoreline suggests.

A selection of Villa supporters on social media were not pleased with the performance of defender Taylor, as he looked a serious weak link against Liverpool.

The 30-year-old Welshman is an experienced left-back that has had a decent career, but he’s out of favour right now under Smith and didn’t boost his chances in midweek.

He was carved open on numerous ocassiosn by Liverpool’s 16-year-old right-winger Harvey Elliott and there was only one player coming out on top in that battle.

Taylor has lost the left-back poison to teammate Matt Targett and a lack of end product when going forward could be another factor in that happening.
