Aston Villa suffered a crushing 3-1 home defeat against Southampton on Saturday afternoon – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter took their frustration out on defender Frederic Guilbert for his performance.

Dean Smith’s side have dropped into the relegation zone in the Premier League and are three points from safety after losing against the Saints.

Villa found themselves trailing by a two-goal lead at half-time, with Danny Ings and Jack Stephens both scoring.

Southampton added a third early in the second period when Ings was gifted his second goal of the game, which meant Jack Grealish’s stunning effort from outside of the box turned out to be nothing but a consolation.

The Midlands club saw Southampton leapfrog them in the table and the fears of being deep in a relegation battle are becoming a reality.

A selection of Villa supporters on social media were fuming with the display of defender Guilbert at the weekend.

The 24-year-old right-back has been an ever-present in the XI this season, but he was part of a struggling backline in the defeat to Southampton and looked sloppy in possession.

He impressed at the beginning of the season to make a good impression on manager Smith, but there has been a noticeable drop off with the level of his displays.
