Aston Villa fans claim Douglas Luiz should have played v Sheffield United

Aston Villa suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat away to Sheffield United on Wednesday – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter were left frustrated that Douglas Luiz was left on the bench.

Dean Smith watched his side lose at Bramall Lane tonight in a Premier League fixture, as they blew the chance to move eighth in the table and close the gap on the European positions.

David McGoldrick’s goal after 30 minutes gave the hosts a lead and they held for a rare three points, despite the fact they had Phil Jagielka sent off in the 57th minute.

A loss for Villa will be extremely frustrating, especially as Sheffield United are rock bottom of the table and it was just their fourth victory of the season.

With club captain Jack Grealish sidelined, a lot of people will now be discussing how much Villa struggle without the talisman in attack.

A selection of Villa supporters on social media felt that one issue could’ve been resolved if Smith looked to his bench.

There are plenty who feel it was the wrong call to leave central midfielder Luiz as an unused substitute.

The 22-year-old Brazilian is a deep-lying playmaker who is great on the ball and has real aggression to his game, but he’s now been left on the bench in three of the club’s last five league matches.
