Jadon Sancho was the beneficiary of Emi Buendia’s first-half injury in Aston Villa’s latest game, but also suffered the ignominy of being replaced later in the match.
Buendia has been in great form for Aston Villa of late, so it was a disappointing moment for fans to see him go down injured early on at Villa Park.
However, when one door closes, another opens, and Jadon Sancho was given the opportunity to show what he can do against his former club, Manchester City.
In the end, it was Matty Cash’s sublime goal and an outstanding performance from Amadou Onana that won the day for Villa. And, among all the action, Sancho endured a career-low moment.

Jadon Sancho subbed on and off vs Man City
In the end, Sancho was on the field for just 45 minutes. He came on in the 29th minute and left the pitch again by the 74th, with the former Man Utd and Chelsea man being replaced by Evann Guessand.
As he came off, Sancho appeared to avoid any contact with his teammate, and then moved away from his manager, Unai Emery. He even seemingly snubbed the Villa boss when he was offered a handshake and an explanation as to why he was being taken off.
Interestingly, Sancho, who has often been the scapegoat in recent years, was given plenty of sympathy by Aston Villa fans online.
Taking to Twitter/X, one Villa supporter said: “Ridiculous subs. Sancho is a threat. Fair play to him avoiding Unai’s handshake.”
Another commented on Emery’s difficulty in connecting with his new players, adding: “Unai try to successfully integrate a new signing challenge. Difficulty: impossible.”
Villa may have got the three points in the end, but supporters believed he made the wrong call at the time. One even said: “Emery mistake today taking Sancho off and leaving Ollie [Watkins] on.”
Another commented, “Harsh on Sancho, he is looking better every time he is on the pitch,” and that was backed up by a fifth who added: “In fairness, I thought we really started to control the game when Sancho came on.”
He’s been through a lot in the last couple of years, and perhaps the tide of popular opinion is turning, at least among Villa fans. “Sancho deserves more I think,” one wrote.

Jadon Sancho’s game by numbers
To be fair to Sancho, he didn’t really do anything wrong against Manchester City. He also didn’t set the world alight, but the fact that Villa were trying to protect their lead and still brought a forward on does feel odd.
Emery explained the decision in his post-match interview, stating: “He’s getting fit. He played 50 minutes, very good minutes on Thursday. I planned for him maybe 60 minutes was too much. But it was very good for him showing his talent. But 60 minutes would’ve been too much for him.
“Of course sometimes the players can feel embarrassed or even angry with me. But it was a tactical decision, it was my plan in case something went wrong. He played a fantastic 45 minutes.”
Looking at the statistics from the game, Sancho’s 45-minute cameo included two shots on target, though one of them was classed as a big chance missed by SofaScore.
