Aston Villa have secured back-to-back Premier League victories after running out 1-0 winners over Southampton on Saturday.

Unai Emery’s charges played twice at Villa Park this week, beating Brentford 3-1 on Wednesday before securing a narrow victory over the Saints at the weekend.

Jhon Duran scored the winner for Villa in the 24th minute of the game as he shrugged off Nathan Wood and curled home when one-on-one with Joe Lumley.

Although Duran was in the spotlight for scoring the winner on his first Premier League start of the season, there were plenty of Villa players who impressed on the day.

A number of Villa fans have been sharing their thoughts on John McGinn’s display against the Saints.

What the media said about McGinn display

John Townley of the Birmingham Mail also claimed that McGinn’s showing was arguably his best of the season so far, giving him a rating of 8 out of 10.

He wrote: ‘The captain made Villa’s first chance of the game when he collected a short corner and swept the ball across the face of goal, but Morgan Rogers couldn’t get enough on his flick to send it goalwards.

‘McGinn’s passing selection was strong and he helped Villa retain possession closer to the striker once they regained it from Southampton. Probably his best showing of the season.’

Likewise, Birmingham World gave McGinn an 8 out of 10 and wrote: ‘Much improved in the number 10 role as he dropped into spaces and progressed attacks on the half-turn.

‘Did his defensive duties well, too, using his low centre of gravity to protect the ball.’

Villa are next in action on Tuesday night when they face RB Leipzig away in the Champions League.
