Aston Villa survived relegation to the Championship by the skin of their teeth in 2019/20.
The club looked doomed at one point, but put together a run of positive results right when it mattered to preserve their Premier League status for another season.
Officials are now hard at work in preparation for 2020/21, where the expectation will be to finish more towards the middle of the table.
To achieve this, the recruitment simply has to be right.
Dean Smith needs individuals with experience of the Premier League and specifically, someone who knows how to score goals in the top-flight.
Mbwana Samatta was brought in in January as a replacement for the injured Wesley Moraes, but the Tanzania international scored just one goal against Bournemouth in a 2-1 defeat.
There may just be an opportunity for Villa to address the issue, but the club must show ambition to pull it off, and that’s to bring Tammy Abraham back to Villa Park.
TBR’s View – Villa could seal mid-table joy with Abraham
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has seemingly warmed to Olivier Giroud in 2020, and the Blues have of course just signed Timo Werner.
All of a sudden, it is difficult to see where regular minutes will come from for the English striker, so perhaps Villa should explore the possibility of re-signing him.
Abraham hit 25 Championship goals for Villa during his loan spell, and scored 15 times in the Premier League for the Blues in 2019/20.
All the evidence is there that he would provide the goals that have been lacking for Villa.
A deal would no doubt be quite expensive to pull off given the £57,000-a-week player (Spotrac) signed an extension last month to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2023 (Guardian) – but a show of ambition by Villa could seriously be worth it and the fans would love to see it.
