Goal’s French outlet have claimed that Aston Villa have received a boost in pursuit of Stade Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy this summer, after Stade Rennais had an offer for the Frenchman rejected.
French newspaper L’Equipe claimed that the 27-year-old is a target for both Aston Villa and Norwich City earlier in the week, after finishing a third season with Stade Reims in Ligue 1.
But the newly-promoted Premier League duo are not by themselves in pursuit of the two-time Senegal international. Indeed, a whole host of French clubs are also said to be keen on the 6ft 5in stopper.
Rennes have now had a bid rejected for the colossal goalkeeper, handing both Villa and Norwich the chance to land Mendy. Reims have set his asking price at a bargain £7.1million.

TBR’s view – Mendy a Villa bargain at just over £7million
Villa need a goalkeeper. Lovre Kalinic is set to leave, Mark Bunn has left, Orjan Nyland still has his doubters and certainly is not Premier League quality. Though harsh on Jed Steer, he is not the long-term solution.
Mendy could be. A presence between the sticks because of his enormous frame, Mendy has shone for Reims – conceding just 86 goals in 85 games, keeping an impressive 35 clean sheets.
At little over £7million, Mendy would be an unbelievably cheap capture for any interested parties and Villa have to make sure they are in pole position.
