Ashley Cole delivers honest verdict on Tottenham striker Harry Kane after hat-trick

Ashley Cole has raved over Tottenham Hotpsur striker Harry Kane during ITV’s coverage (Thursday, 7pm) of England’s 7-0 win over Montenegro, explaining how the England captain is much more than just a goalscorer.

Kane, 26, took his tally for 2019-20 to 19 goals – 10 for Tottenham and nine in just five England games – with a hat-trick on Thursday night as The Three Lions put Montenegro to the sword in what was their 1000th match.

Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Marcus Rashford, Tammy Abraham and an own goal also saw England ease to victory at Wembley. The win confirmed their qualification for Euro 2020, as group winners.

Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender Cole gave his verdict on Kane and his performance on Thursday night, as Kane overtook Alan Shearer, Nat Lofthouse and Frank Lampard to become England’s sixth highest all-time scorer with 31.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful and say he’s just a goalscorer,” Cole said. “He has a cleverness and brings others into play but when he’s in front of goal, he’s quality. All strikers want to score goals, he should be really happy with his contribution.”

TBR’s view – Can Kane beat Wayne Rooney’s record of 53?

It has taken goal machine Kane to reach 31 goals in just 44 appearances and it looks more than likely that he is going to eclipse Rooney’s record. With Euro 2020 next summer and the added competition of the Nations League, there is every chance.

Kane must remain injury free and shake off his troublesome ankle problems that have seen him sit out spells in the past, but he should become England’s record goalscorer before he turns 30.
