Ashley Cole has told Sky Sports’ live post-match coverage (broadcast on 7/7 from 20:00) of Arsenal’s draw with Leicester City that he has been hugely impressed by Kieran Tierney since he arrived at the Emirates, and insisted that he has the qualities to establish himself as a key man for the Gunners for years to come.
Tierney appeared to be one of the players to benefit from the season being halted before starting up again in June.
The left-back had not played since December due to injury. But he has since been a key player for Mikel Arteta’s side.
And he has been hugely impressive during this recent run in the team. And following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City, former Gunners full-back Cole suggested that Tierney seems to tick all of the boxes.
“I think he’s been solid. I think he came to Arsenal with high expectations. Watching him at Celtic, he was brilliant,” he told Sky Sports. “He came I think carrying an injury. He didn’t start the season. And now he’s starting to get back to fitness, and for me, being a star of this Arsenal defence whether he plays in a three or whether he plays as an out and out left-back.
“I think he has top qualities. He can play into a striker, join the attacks as well. He’s got a quality pass. He can defend in one vs one situations. He seems like a defender that doesn’t want to be beat. He’s not happy when crosses go in. So I think for Arsenal, he’s a great player, one for the future. But so far, he’s been brilliant for Arsenal.”
TBR View: Tierney does have one more point to prove
It does appear that many Arsenal fans have had few concerns about Tierney’s ability or potential since his arrival.
The Scotland international has shown when he has played that he is good enough to play at Arsenal’s level. However, there is arguably one question mark still hanging over him.
Tierney did not make his debut until September due to injury. And his previous appearance before the season’s resumption came back in December.
So perhaps he now needs to prove over the coming months that he can be relied upon to stay fit when at the level Arsenal need him to be at.
If he can continue to be a mainstay of Arteta’s side, then Arsenal do indeed appear to have a special player on their hands.
