Real Madrid star Marco Asensio would potentially turn Tottenham Hotspur into genuine Premier League title contenders.

As reported by Marca via The Daily Mirror, Mauricio Pochettino wants to strengthen his squad with the Spaniard in January after failing to sign any new players in the summer of 2018.

Apparently Spurs have ‘made an approach’ for the 22-year-old, who has dazzled in glimpses since bursting onto the scene in 2016.

Asensio did impress on loan at Espanyol in 2015/16, but really rose to prominence when back at his parent club for the 2016/17 campaign.

This season, Asensio is just one of a number of players in the Madrid squad to have not been at their best.

Madrid could be tempted into a sale in January according to Marca, and if Spurs managed to get him then he could take them to the next level.

Asensio would transform Spurs

This is the kind of signing that would allow Spurs to become genuine contenders for the Premier League title.

Asensio is a special talent, but it’s only been seen in glimpses at Madrid.

Given their pool of players, he’s often had to make do with a place on the bench which really is criminal for a player of his ability.

Asensio is a pacy and skilful winger capable of the spectacular.

At the moment Spurs only have Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura as natural wide men.

Asensio would absolutely flourish in Spurs’ team under Pochettino. Unfortunately for the north Londoners though he is under contract until 2023 and would likely be extremely expensive, even if Madrid are open to selling.
