Following on from Red Bull Salzburg’s excellent display in the Champions League on Tuesday night it was Dinamo Zagreb’s turn to cause something of a stir.
The upstart Croatian side put in a fine display to dismantle Serie A opposition Atalanta 4-0 and have certainly got tongues wagging across Europe with their display.
Like Salzburg, there was a hat-trick hero on show. Mislav Orsic was last night’s version of Erling Braut Haland. Also, like with Salzburg, it was the player pulling the strings that looked the real special talent.
For the Austrians, it was South Korean attacker Hwang Hee-chan who caught the eye. Last night, it was Spanish playmaker Dani Olmo.
Tottenham Hotspur fans will undoubtedly be familiar with that name. Olmo was linked with a move to Tottenham throughout the summer after his impressive displays at the European Under-21 Championships with Spain.
Spanish publication Sport suggested that Tottenham were willing to spend up to £36 million on the player, who was also linked with the likes of Everton, Manchester United and Ajax in the summer.
Football.London eventually put paid to the rumours by suggesting Tottenham were ‘not currently’ looking to sign the former Barcelona talent.
However, based on his display yesterday, they probably should have been.
Olmo was involved in all four goals. His jinking run caused the confusion which led to the first. His sublime pass provided the pre-assist for the second. He won the ball of Maarten De Roon in midfield for the third. His touch cannoned back to a team-mate who skyed an assist in for Orsic’s third and Zagreb’s fourth on a historic night.
Tottenham, meanwhile, left Olympiakos with a point after yet another poor showing from both Dele Alli and the summer wantaway Christian Eriksen.
Based on last night, Tottenham would surely much rather have Olmo pulling the strings.
