Not making the same mistake twice

The report states that Roma want to avoid a similar mistake they made with midfielder Steven Nzonzi in 2018.

The Italian giants waited until the end of the World Cup in Russia to sign the then Sevilla midfielder. But after performing well for France as they won the competition, Nzonzi’s valuation inflated.

Roma have since learnt from that mistake, and want to complete the transfer of Xhaka before Euro 2020. The Arsenal maestro is on a reported £100,000-a-week with the club according to Spotrac.

As per the report, the Gunners are sticking to their €20m price tag for the Swiss international.

Xhaka is expected to be one of several first-team players to leave the north London side this summer. As reported by the Guardian, as many as first senior names could depart in the transfer window.

Willian and Hector Bellerin have been heavily linked with departures from the Emirates. Whilst Matteo Guendouzi is reportedly close to a transfer to Marseille according to Le 10 Sport.

As for Xhaka, the midfielder has just two years remaining on his current deal with the Gunners.

Although the Swiss international has been a key first-team player under Mikel Arteta, it appears the Basque manager is keen to refresh the squad radically.

A needed transfer for Arsenal

Xhaka has been a divided figure at Arsenal ever since his arrival in 2016, and after five years with the club, the Gunners are choosing the right time to part ways with the midfielder.

The north London side are yet to finish in the top-four ever since Xhaka’s arrival, and whilst the midfielder has not been the main cause for this problem, it is a convincing enough coincidence that change is needed in the Arsenal squad.
