Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is under fire at the moment.
The England goalkeeper was criticised for his role in Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick for Manchester City on Saturday.
The stopper then caused anxiety in the crowd as he vacated his goal to meet Bernardo Silva for a 50-50, which resulted in him laughing off incident.
Pickford’s form this season has been OK, but he still appears to play with too much emotion at times.
Last term he lost his head at Newcastle United, and there are concerns about him eradicating mistakes from his game.
Pickford’s form means it is a crucial period for young Joao Virginia, who should be looking to impress in a bid to stake his claim for the first-team.
Virginia is currently on loan at Reading, and has made a pretty poor start at the Madejski Stadium.
Virginia, who has made a string of errors, has to improve his form while questions remain about Pickford.
The confident Portuguese teenager really has struggled with the Championship outfit, and made another mistake against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup in midweek.
Virginia needs to turn things around and fast if he is to throw down a challenge to Pickford at Goodison Park next season.
At the moment, he looks miles away from a first-team chance.
