Manchester United are apparently unwilling to meet the £68m asking-price for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Liverpool should be primed to take advantage.
The Daily Mail reports that United have baulked at the price of Kounde. The 22-year-old is widely regarded as one of the very top defensive prospects in Europe, and he has been impressive for Sevilla this term.
Kounde, then, is bound to be a man in demand this summer. Europe’s top clubs are all said to be keen, with United joining the likes of Real Madrid and PSG in casting admiring glances.
But Liverpool, who are in desperate need of a top central defender themselves, should really be looking to join that race as well. Especially, as it seems, Ed Woodward has left the door ajar.
Kounde could have Van Dijk-like impact
People raised eyebrows when Liverpool splashed a similar sum to that of Kounde’s release clause a few seasons back. But look at how that turned out and the impact it had on the entire club?
Surely, then, FSG have to see that as the benchmark and back Jurgen Klopp this summer…starting with the signing of Kounde.
Liverpool will have both Joe Gomez and Van Dijk back next season. But Ozan Kabak has hardly excelled thus far, while Ben Davies was nothing more than a stop gap signing and the likes of Nat Phillips are clearly squad fillers.
The Reds need world-class additions to keep on marching forward. Kounde is certainly in that category. Quick, strong, and more than capable of having the ball – something so crucial at Liverpool – he’d be perfect at Anfield.
And while it might set the Reds back a hefty chunk of change, in the long-term, the addition of Jules Kounde from under the noses of United would be a very smart piece of business indeed.
