TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook says a deal for Newcastle to sign Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier is “as good as done”. Personal terms are said to have been agreed, but a fee is yet to be settled.

Trippier, 31, is one of many players to have been linked with a move to Newcastle since the club’s £305million takeover. Ahead of the January window, it looks as if he could be the new owners’ first signing.

The England international remains a key part of Atletico Madrid’s side. This season, he has started nine of his 12 La Liga appearances, missing three due to a shoulder injury and remaining an unused sub in another.

Trippier has spoke of his desire to return to the Premier League. Now, he could form a reunion with Eddie Howe at Newcastle, having been brought to Burnley from Manchester City during Howe’s time at Turf Moor.

Crook spoke on Wednesday about a deal for Trippier. He said sources have informed him that a deal is “as good as done”. The wages on offer have pleased Trippier’s camp, but a fee needs to be sorted with Atleti.

What has Crook said about Newcastle signing Atletico ace Trippier?

“Kieran Trippier is on his way to St James’ Park from Atletico Madrid. This was suggested to me by somebody I trust, that this is almost as good as done,” Crook told TalkSPORT.

“Trippier’s camp is very happy with the terms on offer. But Newcastle will still need to agree a fee with Atletico Madrid. Newcastle might have to go to more than £25m – but that’s no issue for them.”

Newcastle pulling off a major coup with Trippier, after Crook update

Going into the January window, there were doubts that Newcastle would be able to spend their enormous riches. That is, because of the club’s position in the Premier League. Atletico currently sit in fourth.

However, Diego Simeone’s side are miles off first-placed Real Madrid – 12 points to be exact. So, with the league perhaps out of sight, Trippier could be tempted to go in January. Newcastle are pulling off a major coup.
