Arsenal are said to be keen on signing Tariq Lamptey from Brighton but the Gunners would be just as smart to consider rekindling their interest in Yves Bissouma.
Lamptey was linked with a move to Arsenal over the Christmas period and has sinced signed a new deal with the Seagulls. However, just this week, Duncan Castles claimed on his podcast that the Brighton man very much remains an option for the Gunners.
Hector Bellerin has apparently decided to leave the Gunners this summer. Naturally, that has prompted talk of who can replace the Spaniard, with Lamptey’s name popping up again.
But if Arsenal do go for Lamptey, they might be wise to revisit their interest in a former target in Yves Bissouma.
The combative yet composed midfielder has become a key figure for the Seagulls. However, the Gunners have previously registered an interest in Bissouma, with the player even said to be open to a move if it came about.
Bellerin replacement vital but so is another midfielder
While Granit Xhaka has quietly improved under Mikel Arteta and they did buy Thomas Partey in the summer, few would deny that the midfield needs a new addition.
Dani Ceballos is only on loan, as is Martin Odegaard. Beyond that, in terms of actual central midfield players, the Gunners are left with few options.
Bissouma, then, could be ideal. He doesn’t mind putting his foot in where it hurts but playing at Brighton under Potter, he’s also composed enough to deal with the ball when he does have it. In fact, he’s completely integral to the Seagulls in general.
But money can talk in the Premier League. Not that Arsenal have a ton of it at the moment, but player sales could raise funds in the summer to help bring in fresh talent.
So, while Lamptey might well be the option to replace Bellerin, getting Bissouma in might be just as important.
