Arteta unsure whether Odegaard will be fit to start for Arsenal this weekend
Mikel Arteta said he does not know if Martin Odegaard will be fit to start for Arsenal against Manchester City.
What’s the story?
Speaking in his pre-match press conference yesterday, the Spaniard seemed wary about ruling the Norwegian as fit.
Odegaard has enjoyed a decent pre-season schedule following his return to Real Madrid this summer.
However, upon arrival at the Emirates Stadium last week, the ace had only featured in a handful of friendlies.
His start versus West Brom on Wednesday was his first competitive action since the end of the 2020/2021 campaign.
Nevertheless, Arteta labelled the Norway captain as a ‘really fit boy’ despite his reluctance to confirm his fitness.
When talking about Odegaard, Arteta said: “He’s a really fit boy. He’s had a great pre-season with Madrid. He’s played enough minutes. Let’s see how he recovers from yesterday’s game, how he trains and if he’s ready to start.”
Odegaard has to start for Arsenal
Last weekend’s clash versus Chelsea was a bit of a reality check about the malaise the club finds themselves in.
Among the mounting problems was the lack of creativity in the final third.
It made sense of the Gunners’ move for Odegaard, who had only a few days previously joined for £30m from Real Madrid.
And we saw the Norwegian ace weave his magic against the Baggies on Wednesday evening. He played some great defence-splitting passes, including a sumptuous backheel for Bukayo Saka’s goal.
It probably goes without saying, but Odegaard needs to start for Arsenal despite the comments from Arteta.
The result already looks ominous. However, it could be far worse if the Gunners go into the clash with no creativity.
