'Arteta needs to go': Some Arsenal fans raging after Thursday announcement
Arsenal loanee William Saliba is one of three Gunners players who have made the Golden Boy 40-man shortlist.
And some Arsenal fans are fuming about how one of the top 40 youngsters in world football still can’t get a game under Mikel Arteta.
Saliba has made a name for himself everywhere he’s played – except for the Emirates, where he’s yet to make a competitive appearance.
Saliba joined Arsenal from Saint-Etienne in the summer of 2019 for £27million, arriving to much fanfare.
Arsenal loaned the 20-year-old back to Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the season, and went on to reach the French Cup final.
He finally arrived at the Emirates Stadium last summer and it was hoped that he’d stake a claim for a first-team place.
However, Saliba went out on loan again at the start of 2021, and enjoyed a successful stint at Nice.
Now on loan again, this time at Marseille, Saliba has already played the full 90 minutes in four Ligue 1 games and one Europa League clash.
And on Thursday, the Frenchman joined clubmates Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in the shortlist for the Golden Boy award.
Arteta has made a number of controversial transfer calls since arriving at the club with regards to both incomings and outgoings.
Plenty of Gunners fans are already annoyed at how Arteta has loaned Saliba out.
And seeing the player in the Golden Boy 40-man shortlist hasn’t gone down too well.
Here is what some Arsenal supporters were saying on social media:
The fact the William saliba is on this list and not playing for Arsenal tells me that arteta needs to go https://t.co/KKAX3Ek9zg— R.D.O (@Santana2Rdo) September 17, 2021
to have a golden boy on his team and not keep him for the coming season, isn’t that a crime?— Zoou (@the_disjonctor) September 17, 2021
Is that the same William Saliba that has been deemed "not good enough" elsewhere?— Peter Mhlanga (@ItsMaDash) September 17, 2021

I’ve never seen Saliba play but seeing him make the Golden Boy list is impressive.— Mr. A (@Mr_Alawoki) September 17, 2021
What amazes me however is why Arteta never deems him fit to play at all and had to send him back on loan.

Football is not supposed to be this hard to understand.
