Bukayo Saka is currently enjoying a breakout season for Arsenal. Despite regularly playing out of position as a makeshift left-back, the 18-year-old has regularly impressed for the Gunners in recent months.
The academy graduate has managed 23 first-team outings across all competitions in this campaign. According to Transfermarkt’s stats, Saka has racked up three goals and six assists in that time.
Saka is certainly a huge talent for the future. The north London club will be hoping for great things to come from the winger. However, Arsenal may face a challenge in even keeping the exciting teenager at the Emirates Stadium for the long term.
Saka’s current contract is set to expire at the end of next season. This means that Arsenal could lose the England under-19 international as a free agent, unless a new agreement with the player is reached.
The club will be desperate to agree new terms with Saka as soon as possible. However, according to the Telegraph, Arsenal are yet to find a breakthrough in negotiations with the teen attacker.
Arsenal are certainly no strangers to losing talented players for free having failed to extend their contracts in time. They lost Aaron Ramsey last summer in similar circumstances, and Serge Gnabry before that.
However, Mikel Arteta appears to be remaining calm about the situation. Speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s upcoming clash with Newcastle, and as quoted by the club’s official website, the Spaniard said of Saka’s situation, “we have Edu [Gaspar], we have Raul [Sanllehi], Vinai [Venkatesham] and Huss [Fahmy] who are in charge of that and I am sure we will do the right thing when players deserve to improve and extend their contracts”.
Arsenal fans will certainly be hoping that Arteta’s confidence is not misplaced, and that Saka’s future with the club can be secured quickly.
