Mikel Arteta has issued a positive response when asked whether the performance of Gabriel Martinelli was his best for Arsenal as they beat West Ham on Wednesday – in comments reported by Football London.

The Gunners moved themselves into the top four in the Premier League. Martinelli opened the scoring before Emile Smith Rowe wrapped up the points late on.

Martinelli took the goal superbly, finding the bottom corner after being played in by Alexandre Lacazette. He certainly deserved the goal after an outstanding display.

In fact, only Lacazette won more tackles for Arsenal than the Brazilian, according to Whoscored. He made four successful challenges during the contest.

And while Arteta insisted that there is still plenty for Martinelli to work on, he suggested that it was a fantastic all-round performance when asked if it was the youngster’s best.

“Certainly, it was one of the best in every aspect of the game,” he said, as reported by Football London. “Physically he’s growing, today he was cramping again, and he needs to mature on that side of the game. But his overall understanding of the game is much better.

“He’s able to put some gears into his play sometimes instead of doing everything 100 miles per hour. But the energy and the quality he shows up front is top.”

Gabriel Martinelli back on track as Mikel Arteta lauds display in Arsenal win

Martinelli is threatening to enjoy a real breakout year for the Gunners. He had previously captured the imagination with some outstanding displays shortly after his move. Sadly, long-term injury halted his progress for some time.

He has now featured in 10 of their Premier League games this term. Admittedly, he has only completed 90 minutes on two occasions.

But he now has two goals and two assists in his last five appearances. He is leaving Arteta with plenty to ponder as he continues to impress in that wide left role.

Emile Smith Rowe did not even start against the Hammers. But Martinelli did his best to ensure that he will not be the one to drop out to make way for Smith Rowe.
