Arteta asked if it's impossible for Arsenal star to sign new contract

Mikel Arteta has responded after being asked whether it is impossible for Alexandre Lacazette to sign a new Arsenal contract – in comments reported by Football London.

Lacazette is yet to start a Premier League game this season. He has come off the bench on three occasions so far.

His lack of game-time comes amid speculation over his future at the Emirates. As things stand, his contract with the Gunners expires in the summer.

The 30-year-old has had an interesting time since arriving from Lyon. He has always boasted a decent record in North London. However, he is yet to score more than 14 times in a single Premier League season.

And with Arsenal paying the price for handing older players lengthy contracts in the past, it did appear that Lacazette was likely to be on the way out.

However, he reminded everyone of what he can do after coming on on Monday. He looked incredibly lively as Arsenal chased an equaliser against Crystal Palace.

And it was Lacazette who scored the crucial goal with virtually the last kick of the game.

He is certainly knocking on the door for a start. And perhaps he may also be staking a claim for a new deal, with Arteta issuing a clear response when asked if it was impossible for Lacazette to sign a new contract.

“No. Anything is possible,” he said, as reported by Football London.

Arsenal have left themselves in tricky position over Lacazette and his contract

Lacazette must surely have a lot more to prove before Arsenal extend his contract. He earns £182,000-a-week. So it would be a gamble to keep him.

They only need to look at how Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struggled after extending his deal to see the risk involved.

Having said that, losing him on a free also leaves the door open for fans to be left incredibly frustrated.
