Arteta appears to have made a big mistake for which Arsenal fans might not forgive him easily - TBR View
Arsenal fans watching the Copa America semi-final last night will have no doubt have been dismayed at what they saw.
Emiliano Martinez, who came through the Gunners ranks, saved three penalties for Argentina en route to the final.
The 28-year-old, who spent 10 years on Arsenal’s books, swapped the Emirates Stadium for Aston Villa in a reported £20million deal last summer.
Martinez was a deputy for much of his time at Arsenal.
However, he excelled in the injury-enforced absence of Bernd Leno last summer, helping to win the FA Cup and Community Shield.
A desire for regular first-team football and winning caps for Argentina led to Martinez seeking first-team action elsewhere.
Sure, it was a tough decision for Arteta to make, and now we have the benefit of hindsight.
But moving Martinez on and keeping Leno, whilst also bringing in Alex Runarsson, really does look like a comedy of errors.
Martinez was absolutely sensational for Villa last term, while Leno struggled at times and Runarsson failed to make an impact.
So much so, in fact, that Arsenal ended up signing Mat Ryan on loan.
Now, the Gunners are scrambling around looking for a new goalkeeper, while Martinez is going from strength to strength for club and country.
And it’s not like selling Martinez is the only controversial decision Arteta has made, in the eyes of Arsenal fans.
Offloading Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi, signing Willian… the list isn’t short.
