Arsenal are set to battle Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of Austrian playmaker Marcel Sabitzer.
That is according to ESPN journalist Julien Laurens, who made the claim on the Gab & Juls Show podcast. He claims Arsenal are ready to battle their North London rivals for the £45 million arrival of the RB Leipzig star.
Which is interesting, considering that Leipzig might have just replaced Sabitzer with a long-term Arsenal target.
The German side won the battle for Hungarian superstar in the making Dominik Szoboszlai this month. The 20-year-old switched to Leipzig from sister club Salzburg for a reported (Guardian) €25 million (£22.5m) when the transfer window opened this month.
Arsenal had been in the running to sign the playmaker, who had been showcasing his immense talents for both club and country this season.
But Leipzig’s relationship with Salzburg through Red Bull made the transition smooth and now Szoboslzlai will have his eyes firmly placed on Sabitzer’s starting role in midfield.
Which might benefit Arsenal. Leipzig will no doubt need to consider moving a player on to make money and with 26-year-old Sabitzer in his prime and at his highest market value, now would be the perfect time to sell.
So whilst Arsenal may have missed out on target. His location might have helped them in any pursuit for another.
