'Arsenal's big problem': Edu's tried to sign £35m star but he doesn't want to join, journalist says
Dean Jones says that Arsenal have tried to sign Ruben Neves from Wolves, but he doesn’t want to join them.
Speaking to the Football Terrace, the journalist claims that Arsenal’s move for Neves is now in major doubt.
Arsenal were initially linked with the Wolves midfielder early on in the summer transfer window, as Mikel Arteta looked to upgrade his midfield ranks.
But it seems that any deal for the player will have to wait, as he has doubts over making a move to the Emirates Stadium, with other higher placed sides also keen on him.
“They have definitely tried. The player isn’t sure if that’s the right move for him at this stage,” Jones said.
“With Manchester United in view he’d rather wait things out and see if that comes to fruition.
“This is Arsenal’s big problem, they genuinely didn’t know who they could sign for the club at a time when they didn’t have European football.”
Neves’s reticence to move to Arsenal is, perhaps, understandable.
Arsenal don’t have European football on offer and Neves has proven himself capable of being a standout midfielder in the Premier League over a number of years now.
Arsenal’s project so far has required them to sign more unearthed gems than established superstars this summer.
While Neves, himself, isn’t exactly a massive name – he is a solid Premier League performer and has proven his quality over a number of years now, with Wolves said to be wanting £35 million for him (The Sun).
His arrival at Arsenal could be appealing, as he would have the capabilities to be an ideal partner to the more energetic Thomas Partey, but it seems Neves would have to have a change of heart before any deal could become possible.
