Arsenal were reportedly in talks for Yacine Brahimi but he’s off to Qatari side Al-Rayyan

The experienced midfielder was a free agent this summer.

Earlier this month, Sky Sports News reported that Arsenal were in talks over signing former Porto midfielder Yacine Brahimi on a free transfer.

The Gunners have a limited transfer budget and the free agent may have appealed to Unai Emery in a window where he needs to get recruits over the line.

But the Algerian, fresh from winning the African Cup of Nations with his country, has flown out to Qatar to finalise his move to Al-Rayyan, according to French outlet L’Equipe.

They report that several European clubs were in the hunt for the 29-year-old, but he has opted for a move to Asia, but the length of his contract is not revealed.

In some ways, Gunners fans may feel that they’ve had a lucky escape with Brahimi going elsewhere – because they need players who are younger and brighter than the aging winger.

Arsenal need other positions as a higher priority and when there are promising wide targets like Wilfried Zaha and Nicolas Pepe potentially on the market, Brahimi would have been a major disappointment.

So they’re likely best off without the Algerian, who would likely have been held up as another signal of a lack of ambition and can now move on to better targets.
