Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has stated to Bein Sports that he tried to sign Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho.
The legendary manager was a pundit on the television station’s Champions League coverage and made the admission live on air.
Sancho departed Manchester City in 2017 to sign for Dortmund where he has since taken the Bundesliga by storm.
The 18-year-old has contributed 11 assists and seven goals to Dortmund’s 2018/19 campaign, helping the club to the top of the league in the process.
His form at present is making a mockery out of City’s decision not to tie him down to a longer deal at the Etihad Stadium.
Sancho has three England caps to his name and Wenger says he wanted the tricky winger at the Emirates before he made the switch to Germany.
Wenger told Bein Sports: “I wanted to take him from Man City when he didn’t get the games.
“I tried to lure him because he’s from London. I tried to get him to Arsenal. He’s one of the best players of his generation.”
The man who departed Arsenal at the end of last season believes the youngster has all the attributes to become one of the best players in the world.
He continued: “He can dribble, he has the arrogance.
“There’s something in there that is part of the big players. You can call it arrogance, confidence, belief; but it has to be there.”
Sancho definitely looks like a big star of the future in world football.
Even Dortmund are probably surprised at the immediate impact he has had on the Bundesliga.
He is already a firmly established member of their team and these comments from Wenger will surely disappoint Arsenal fans that a deal couldn’t be completed.
