Danny Welbeck signed for Watford during the summer transfer window following his release from Arsenal.

The former England international ended a five-year association with the Gunners when Unai Emery opted not to renew his contract.

In 126 appearances for the North London-based outfit, he netted 32 goals and registered 15 assists.

Welbeck was a popular figure with Arsenal fans and some were keen to see him earn an extension to his contract.

The 28-year-old suffered some rotten luck with injury problems and can count himself a little bit unfortunate not to still be at the Emirates Stadium.

On Saturday, Welbeck played his first game for Watford. He was introduced as a substitute 23 minutes from time in a 1-0 defeat against Everton.

Following the game he finally got round to saying his thanks to the Arsenal faithful on Twitter:

The Gunners have bolstered their ranks considerably during the summer.

It is fair to say that if Welbeck was still at the club his first-team chances would be limited. Nonetheless, he was still a popular figure among the club’s supporters.

Following his heartfelt message of thanks, the Arsenal supporters were keen to pay their own tributes to their former player.

Here is a selection of tweets from Arsenal fans following Welbeck’s tweet:
