Arsenal have reportedly identified Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong as a top transfer target.

That’s according to Football Transfers, with the outlet claiming that Mikel Arteta and Edu Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar think the defender could also play in midfield.

The Gunners are currently short of more attack-minded options at right-back, with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu offering similar profiles in the position.

Of course, White has struck up an excellent partnership with Bukayo Saka and continues to improve in an attacking sense. But there’s no doubt his strengths lie in his defensive work.

The full-back is turning heads with his displays in Germany this season, with the Gunners reportedly scouting him recently.

And a fresh report claims that Arsenal see Frimpong as a versatile option for Arteta’s squad.

Arteta and Edu think Frimpong could play in midfield

Football Transfers claims Frimpong has emerged as a major transfer target for the Gunners.

It’s noted that Arsenal are searching for a more attacking option at right-back.

Indeed, Arteta and Edu have even earmarked the 22-year-old as a ‘specialist right-back’ who could provide cover in midfield too.

Frimpong has excelled in the Bundesliga this season and has been labelled a ‘special’ talent by his current boss Xabi Alonso.

The Dutch defender has netted six times and provided seven assists from wing-back this term. He’s expected to leave Leverkusen next summer, with a host of top clubs showing interest.

A move to Arsenal would certainly be an interesting switch as White has excelled at right-back.

The Gunners also snapped up Jurrien Timber over the summer and he’s expected to provide competition at both right-back and left-back when returning from injury.

It would feel unnecessary to replace White anytime soon given his form over the past year. But Arteta has proven to be a ruthless operator in the transfer market and Frimpong would be an exciting addition to this Arsenal side.
