It’s a tricky home tie against Southampton today for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta hopes to see his side return to winning ways in the Premier League.
A devastating late blow at Everton ensured another defeat for the Gunners in midweek. Demarai Gray fired in from range in injury time to further dent Arsenal’s progress under Arteta.

However, a home tie with the Saints is a good chance for the Gunners here. But while Arteta could choose to drop Aubameyang once again in place of Eddie Nketiah, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes £30m signing Martin Odegaard will also be lucky to keep his place.
“I do feel Martinelli should continue on the left hand side and it might be time to put Smith Rowe back in the 10. Odegaard scored the other night but when we are out of possession I’m not sure he’s offering enough to protect the midfield,” Keown said. (quotes via Metro)
‘”It’s not about just two midfield players sitting there it’s about three and what you’re getting from those players.”
Smith Rowe missed out at Everton but is thought to be back fit for the weekend. Prior to that game, he had been a key player for the Gunners so a recall is looking likely.
TBR’s View: Smith Rowe Has To Play For Arsenal Against Southampton
Whether he comes in for Odegaard or Martinelli is open for debate. But the debate about whether Smith Rowe plays if he is fit is not open for debate. Put simply, the England midfielder has to start.
Smith Rowe has been outstanding for Arsenal this season at times. He’s probably been the best player for the Gunners, so not playing him if he is fit is a senseless decision.
If Arsenal want to get back to winning ways, then Smith Rowe plays against Southampton. Keown probably has a point, in that Martinelli deserves to keep his chance.
