Arsenal transfer news: Some Gunners fans want 24-year-old signed after Euro 2020 masterclass
A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Joakim Maehle’s display as Denmark produced a stunning performance to book their ticket to the Euro 2020 knockout stages – with several imploring the Gunners to target him in the transfer window.
The Danes went into their final group fixture bottom of the table. Of course, the tragic events involving Christian Eriksen had certainly played their part in explaining why Kasper Hjulmand’s men had lost both of their first two games.
They not only had the home crowd on their side against Russia on Monday, but it seems that they also had most of Europe willing them across the line.
They got there. And in some style.
Denmark won 4-1 to move up to second spot. Wales now await in Amsterdam in the last 16.
The Denmark players are already heroes to many after their incredible show of strength when their teammate needed them most.
But on the pitch, several showed why many tipped them to be dark horses before the competition began.
And perhaps few performances on Monday were as impressive as the one that came from Maehle.
The 24-year-old’s energy down the Dane’s left flank was frightening. He was up and back all evening. He gave Russia a torrid time as they looked for the result that would have sent them through.
And he rounded off the victory with the final goal with a superb finish from the edge of the box.
If Andreas Christensen’s thunderous strike had all the emotion of the previous 10 days behind it, Maehle’s measured hit was symbolic of a side that had realised that they were back on track at Euro 2020.
‘So so good’: Arsenal fans want Maehle in transfer window after Euro 2020 display
And it appears that Maehle’s display caught the eye of plenty of Arsenal fans on social media.
Arsenal are on the lookout for a new right-back this summer. Hector Bellerin has been heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates.
Several names are reportedly on the radar. And while some – such as Tariq Lamptey – have gone down well with fans, there are concerns about others reportedly on the list: see the reaction to the links with Jonjoe Kenny.
Admittedly, Maehle is unlikely to be on the move this summer. He only joined Atalanta in January. And Champions League football awaits for the Serie A side next year.
However, many Arsenal supporters would clearly love to see him join the club.
He is predominantly a right-back, but he can also play on the left. And as he showed on Monday, he can be simply devastating in the wing-back role.
Maehle only recently turned 24 as well, so his peak may well lie ahead. And as his stock only continues to rise at Euro 2020, it is difficult to imagine what Atalanta would potentially want for him if a team came calling this summer.
‘Should go for Maehle’
But Arsenal supporters would clearly love it if Edu at least asked the question in the transfer window.
With that in mind, here is what some of the Gunners fans were saying about the Denmark defender as they booked their ticket to the Euro 2020 knockout stages…
