‘Never sell’, ‘Deserves a chance’: Some Arsenal fans react to reported plan for 21-year-old
Some Arsenal fans have been reacting on social media to reports by CBS, claiming Mikel Arteta plans to include Reiss Nelson among the first-team players to be transfer listed.
The Gunners are working on increasing their transfer budget by offloading a host of regular and fringe senior players. Arteta is hopeful their exits will allow the north London side to sign several options across his starting line-up.
Arsenal are eager to add a new attacking midfielder, central midfielder and right-back to replace Hector Bellerin. The Spaniard continues to be a target for Atletico Madrid, but only if the La Liga champions sell Kieran Trippier.
Nelson likewise faces an uncertain future at his boyhood club. The Gunners product will be allowed to leave amid interest from sides in the Bundesliga. He previously spent time in Germany while on loan with TSG Hoffenheim for the 2018/19 season.
The former England U21 international made 29 appearances and scored seven goals in all competitions for Hoffenheim. But chances to feature back in north London have been thin and far between, especially after the arrival of Arteta.
Nelson made just nine appearances for Arsenal last season. However, of those, only two came in the Premier League for a total of 69 minutes. The last of his top-flight outings also came in November before featuring just once in any competition in 2021.
Other players bound for the Emirates Stadium exit door include Roma-linked midfielder Granit Xhaka. Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock are also available for the right fee, to help fund a move for Martin Odegaard.
The Real Madrid maestro remains Arsenal’s top target for the attacking midfield role after his half-season loan spell. Brighton star Yves Bissouma is also under consideration for the deep-lying midfield position.
Arsenal fans want Nelson to stay
But some Arsenal fans reacting on social media to reports Arteta is willing to sell Nelson have not taken the news well. That’s because many want to see the winger stay and be given a real chance at the Emirates next season.
Others also believe Nelson was not given a real opportunity to establish himself last term. They now fear what the 21-year-old could achieve away from north London, after seeing Serge Gnabry take his career to another level.
