Arsenal transfer: Gunners linked 25-year-old wanted by Napoli

Arsenal have been joined in the race for Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana by Napoli, according to Calcio Mercato. The Serie A club are keen to make a move for the custodian at the end of the season when he will be out of contract.

The Gunners signed Aaron Ramsdale in the summer. That £30 million transfer looks to be showing signs of reward already, but Onana will still be on the radar.

The experienced Ajax man is only 25 but has received plenty of action in Holland. He has made 204 appearances, keeping 83 clean sheets for the Eredivisie outfit.

Onana excelled during the 2018/19 campaign when he helped the Dutch giants reach the semi-final of the Champions League. Since then, the former Barcelona youth player hasn’t been short of interest.

It was claimed that Onana might be available for £7 million in the summer (Goal). The 18-cap international is currently serving a doping ban, however, and can’t make a return to action until November.

Bernd Leno had been Arsenal’s number one. He has been surpassed in the team by Ramsdale though and the £30 million summer recruit looks like keeping his place.

As a result, Leno could find himself wanting out of Arsenal and that could open the door for Onana to arrive at the Emirates Stadium.

Future star: Arsenal have to pounce on Onana

Given that Ramsdale has already wrestled the gloves away from Leno it perhaps makes sense that Arsenal didn’t land Onana. He wouldn’t have been able to play until November and taking him in the summer wasn’t feasible.

In 2022 the player will be available for free though and that makes him a no-brainer addition to the Arsenal ranks.

At 25 you’ll struggle to find a goalkeeper with as many men’s appearances at such a gigantic club that Onana.

He can play a bit too. He is quick off his line, commands his box well and also adopts the modern-day approach of playing out from the back.

Napoli will have significant clout but Arsenal have to make the first move to sign the £35,000-a-week stopper next summer.
