Arsenal are preparing an astonishing raid on fierce rivals Tottenham to land central defender Toby Alderweireld, according to The Sun.
The 30-year-old has a clause in his Spurs contract that allows him to leave for a paltry £25 million.
Back in February, the Daily Mail reported that Unai Emery will have just £45 million to spend in the summer.
That could increase should the Gunners secure Champions League football this season but signing Alderweireld on the cheap would be ideal for Emery.
The Belgian is currently earning £80k-a-week at Spurs, according to Silly Season. Arsenal would probably hand him a pay rise too given that the transfer fee would be cheap in today’s market.
Alderweireld has played 41 games in all competitions for Spurs this season and it will be interesting to see where he ends up ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
This transfer deal would arguably be the most shocking signing of the close season.
Not since Sol Campbell in 2001 as a player switched Spurs for Arsenal and any potential deal would be astonishing.
In footballing terms, the Belgian defender would represent a solid signing for the Gunners.
At times this season, a soft underbelly has been evident at the Emirates Stadium, particularly at the back.
Alderweireld would certainly help shore the Gunners up and he could make Arsenal regular top four finishers with his defensive qualities.
