Fierce rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are set to go head-to-head this summer for the signing of Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico, according to The Sun.
The left-back has been a big part of Erik ten Hag’s team this season but it looks as though they could cash in on the 26-year-old.
Tagliafico played in both legs of Ajax’s stunning Champions League victory over Real Madrid recently.
He has featured in 34 games in total for the Dutch giants and his signature is set to be sought-after when the window reopens.
The report suggests that Barcelona are also interested in landing the defender, which could throw a spanner in the works for the North London pairing.
Losing Tagliafico would represent a blow for Ajax but the reported £15 million that they are demanding for their player would allow them to strengthen.
Spurs haven’t signed a player for two years, whilst Arsenal are desperate to shore up a defensive unit that has leaked goals this season.
It isn’t really a surprise that Tagliafico is going to be sought by several clubs this summer.
His performances in the Eredivisie and the Champions League have been a joy to behold at times this season.
The battle for his signature looks interesting though.
Spurs probably hold the upper hand given that they haven’t signed a player for two years and will hold bigger financial clout.
Danny Rose and Ben Davies are solid if unspectacular defenders and the Ajax man would represent an upgrade.
Arsenal desperately need a new left-sided defender.
Nacho Monreal is not exactly the sort of man you mould your team around and his performances are sporadic at best.
Of course, if Barcelona flex their muscle then both Spurs and Arsenal could be left disappointed.
The race to sign Tagliafico looks like being an interesting one.
