Football journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Arsenal believe they are the favourites to sign Palmeiras youngster Danilo in one of the two transfer windows next year.

The Gunners have long been linked with a move to sign the talented Brazilian midfielder. The North Londoners even reportedly tried to lure him in on transfer deadline day, but a move never materialised. Jones, however, believes that Arsenal could sign him next year.

On transfer deadline day last week, reports revealed that Arsenal weren’t actually planning on making a move for Danilo, but circumstances could’ve forced them to.

Mikel Arteta decided to go after Douglas Luiz instead in the end, and despite Arsenal’s best efforts, a move did not materialise.

Arsenal’s next chance to sign a new player will be in January, and Danilo, who is protected by a release clause of £86 million, may well be the man the Gunners will make a move for.

Jones has revealed that Arsenal believe they will lead the race to sign him next year.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think we can expect Arsenal to maintain their interest in Danilo, who they had set as a top tier target heading into the summer window.

“There was a temptation to try for him because of their situation but he’s a young player in Brazil and they are content that they will lead the way for him next year anyway.”

TBR View:

Arsenal are extremely light in midfield following injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.

The Gunners started the game against Manchester United with Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga in the middle of the park. The duo weren’t bad at all, but two moments of positional indiscipline by Lokonga in the second half cost Arsenal the game.

Arsenal need better cover in defensive midfield and Aston Villa star Luiz would’ve been a great signing. However, a move for him failed on deadline day, and Arteta could now choose to focus on Danilo instead in January.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, but if Jones is to be believed, Arsenal seem confident of beating anyone else in the race to sign Danilo next year.
