Arsenal target Marcus Rashford once compared with Thierry Henry
Surprise reports have claimed that Arsenal are interested in signing Marcus Rashford with the Manchester United forward now having doubts about his future at Old Trafford.
Rashford has slipped closer to the periphery of the squad this season. And it seemed particularly ominous that he was left out of the starting lineup for the Manchester derby on Sunday.
The Etihad Stadium had previously been the setting for one of Rashford’s greatest triumphs, scoring the only goal in a win back in 2016.
Now however, it appears that he has questions about his role moving forward. And with that, clubs such as Arsenal are lurking in the background.
Mikel Arteta’s men definitely need to sign at least one striker this summer. And signing Rashford would be an incredible statement of intent – even amidst all of his struggles this season.
Certainly, if Rashford could recapture his best form, there is no question that he would be an absolutely unbelievable signing for Arsenal.
In fact, Arsenal would be signing a player who has previously been compared with Thierry Henry.
Paul Merson suggested in 2017 that Rashford had the potential to become one of the world’s best.
“I think so. I think he’s a right handful, quick, strong and getting more intelligent as the game goes on,” he told Sky Sports, when asked if he could become one of the world’s best.
“Nobody likes to play against pace, especially when you’re direct like him. He makes defenders think.
“I can’t talk highly enough of this kid. He uses his pace in exactly the same way as Thierry Henry did.”
Arsenal must act if there is any chance of Marcus Rashford deal this summer
In truth, it is hard to see Rashford joining Arsenal. He is so heavily connected with Manchester United. And there are big changes in the offing at Old Trafford this summer.
But Arsenal must act if the door is at all open. Rashford is a player with 98 goal involvements in 197 Premier League appearances during his career. And he should still be one or two years away from his peak.
Obviously, the comparisons with Henry were made some time ago. And it looks unlikely that he will get near that level. But it does highlight just how special he could be if his career gets back on track.
It will be fascinating to see if Arsenal offer him a fresh challenge this summer.
