Patrick Vieira has been sacked by French club OGC Nice after a dismal run of form that saw Nice suffer five straight defeats in all competitions under the Arsenal legend’s guidance – and Gunners fans have reacted on Twitter.
Vieira, 44, lasted in charge at Nice for 89 matches and had a win percentage of less than 40% – picking up just 35 in total. He lasted one less match than his 90-game tenure at MLS side New York City, but is now without a new home.
Nice sit in a decent, but hardly spectacular 11th place in France’s top tier – but having qualified for the Europa League, many had hoped for a better start to the campaign. Thursday’s 3-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen was a step too far for Vieira, though.
Indeed, the Invincibles captain saw his Nice side knocked out of the Europa League at the group stage – with Nice losing four of their five matches and picking up just three points. Nice confirmed the news on Friday morning.
Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, is also under pressure as Arsenal manager. The Gunners sit in a lowly 14th place – three worse than Vieira’s Nice – having failed to win a Premier League match in more than a month. Arsenal have been faultless in Europ, though.
Many Arsenal supporters are disgruntled on social media and upon hearing that Vieira has become available – many have urged the Gunners board to consider a move to bring the Frenchman back to north London.
Some have suggested he returns as Arteta’s assistant.
