Arsenal still have one eye on £33m striker as they close in on signing Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal appear to have found their new striker as they close in on a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres.

Indeed, Gyokeres looks set to join Arsenal, but, as all Gunners fans know, deals aren’t done until they’re signed and announced.

We’ve seen this before where a deal at Arsenal looks done and dusted only to collapse at the last minute. Mykhaylo Mudryk was meant to join Arsenal before heading to Chelsea instead, while Ivan Toney was widely expected to join Arsenal at one point too.

The Gyokeres deal isn’t done yet, and while it looks close, Arsenal need to have other options in mind.

Speaking on The Athletic’s YouTube channel, David Ornstein has been discussing this situation, and he says that Arsenal will remain attentive to the Ollie Watkins situation right up until another deal is completed.

Arsenal still have one eye on Ollie Watkins

Ornstein spoke about Arsenal’s interest in the £33m man.

Arsenal made a bid for Watkins in the January transfer window, and while the deal didn’t get done at that time, the Gunners still retain some sort of interest in the England international.

“Ollie Watkins is a top Premier League ready striker, and England international, he’s a bit older, but his numbers speak for themselves. His body is in amazing condition, he’s a brilliant lad, he’s being looked at by a number of clubs.

“I’m sure Arsenal will remain attentive to that situation until and unless something else gets completed.”

Ollie Watkins’ English football record compared to Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal remain somewhat keen on Watkins, but it would appear as though Gyokeres is the man the Gunners will go for.

Gyokeres has been scoring tons of goals over in Portugal, but, let’s not forget, he has played in England before, and his record in English football isn’t quite as impressive as Watkins’.

Despite the fact Watkins has been playing top-flight football and Gyokeres’ time in England was mostly in the Championship, the Englishman’s record is better than his Portuguese counterpart’s.

Of course, Gyokeres is slightly younger and he has been scoring more regularly over the past two years, but there is an argument to make that Watkins would be the stronger signing here given his record at this level.
