Arsenal star Xhaka reportedly struck with Covid setback while on international duty

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has been struck down with a positive Covid test.

The Swiss international, ahead of his country’s friendly clash with Greece, was announced to be out of the fixture and facing a 10-day isolation period on Wednesday evening.

The Athletic report that the Swiss FA are planning a second test on Thursday which may change the situation.

Should Xhaka’s 10 day isolation period be upheld, it would prove to be a blow for Arsenal.

The issue isn’t one of potentially missing any matches, seeing as Xhaka is suspended for the Gunners’ next outing against Norwich after his red card against Man City.

Indeed, the problem would be that the 28-year-old would have to sit out of 10 days of training, losing fitness and match sharpness.

This will come as a blow to Mikel Arteta, who is already struggling this season.

The Gunners sit at the foot of the table having lost their opening three fixtures by an aggregate score of 9-0.

In the Premier League’s returning week after this international break, though, Arsenal have a great chance of earning their first points of the season against 19th-placed Norwich.

Missing Xhaka won’t help, but the fans will be hoping the midfielder can fully recover and return to training in time to be ready for their game against Burnley on September 18th.

Arsenal fans will now be spending the rest of the international break with their finger crossed, hoping that no more of their players are struck down with injury or illness.

It would be the last thing the Gunners need after a turgid start to the 2021/22 campaign.
