Emiliano Martinez continued his excellent start to life at Aston Villa with an impressive clean sheet against Leicester City on Sunday evening – and the Argentine goalkeeper has earned the praise of Arsenal attacker Gabriel Martinelli.
Martinez, 28, joined Villa for a fee of £17million (BBC) from Arsenal in the summer – after the Argentine broke into the Gunners first team and clocked up 23 appearances last term. He has since played all four of Villa’s league games this term.
Dean Smith’s side have clocked up four wins in a row – keeping three clean sheets and conceding just two goals, which came in a 7-2 win over champions Liverpool. The Midlands side, despite finishing 17th last term, have been one of the best this term.
Martinez produced numerous stops to keep his clean sheet intact on Sunday, producing saves to prevent the likes of Timothy Castagne, Kelechi Iheanacho and Youri Tielemans. He posted on Instagram after Villa secured a late 1-0 win.
Villa have been sensational with Smith’s work in the transfer window paying off. Martinez is an example of just that, but it was Ross Barkley that produced the difference on Sunday, as he scored a late winner from the best part of 25 yards.
Martinez remains a well-liked figure at Arsenal and that was clear to see on Instagram after Villa’s win, with Brazilian star Martinelli commenting a one-word message on Martinez’s post – describing him as a “phenomenon”.
