'Unfair': PL attacker says £30m Arsenal player has received too much undeserved criticism

Andros Townsend has praised Arsenal midfield Granit Xhaka live on air during the World Cup clash between Switzerland and Cameroon. The former Tottenham player was on co-commentary duty as the two nations opened their campaign in Qatar.

Xhaka was in midfield for Switzerland and captained the outfit as they faced the African qualifiers. The £30 million Arsenal man was playing in his 108th international for his country and led by example.

Arsenal are enjoying a fantastic season. Xhaka has been a mainstay in Mikel Arteta’s team and at the break for the World Cup, they sit five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

With this morning’s match two minutes old, talk between the commentators turned towards the Arsenal man. Despite his Tottenham ties, Townsend was extremely complimentary when it came to Xhaka.

He said live on ITV (24/11; 10:02): “He’s had some unfair criticism but whenever I’ve played against him I’ve had a tough game. He has a huge influence at Arsenal.”

Xhaka will hope to help Switzerland enjoy a strong campaign. At 30-years-old, it remains to be seen whether or not this might be the last chance that the Arsenal man gets at World Cup glory.

He worked tirelessly for his country against Cameroon. He leads the team with aplomb and quite clearly his teammates look up to him in the Switzerland ranks.

Xhaka praised by Townsend during Switzerland match

The former Tottenham star is proving a decent co-commentator at this World Cup. He’s knowledgable, insightful and ultimately, he’s a man who knows what it takes to star at the top level.

His comments on Xhaka were fair. At times during his spell at Arsenal, Xhaka has become public enemy number one and although some of those occasions were justified, he’s now proving his worth.

Xhaka has scored four goals and claimed three assists this season. He’s now a valued member of Arteta’s team and he could have a big say in the team’s fortunes during the 2022/23 campaign.

Having played 270 games for the Gunners, the Switzerland star is now part of the furniture. If he could lead the team to Premier League glory this season, he might just start to get the full respect he deserves.
