Arsenal should use Chelsea links to sign Marcos Alonso this summer

Arsenal’s season hit a bit of a low this week as they bowed out of the Europa League following a dour display against Villarreal last night.

The Gunners simply didn’t have the stomach for the game and, ultimately, were put the sword by their old manager, Unai Emery.

Mikel Arteta spoke bullishly in his interviews after the game. But the Spaniard knows deep down it wasn’t good enough and he now faces another summer of reshaping his squad, as he looks to ensure this season is not repeated again.

Arsenal need players in a number of positions it seems. Not least at the left-back slot, where Granit Xhaka has had to deputise recently with Kieran Tierney out injured. It’s clearly a problem position if Tierney is out, otherwise, Xhaka would not be put there.

But one player who could potentially solve that problem for Arsenal is current Chelsea man, Marcos Alonso. The Spaniard is set to be sold by Chelsea this summer, according to a report from Goal.

And with the Gunners having history of taking Chelsea players, could we about to see a repeat this summer?

Alonso’s experience is ideal for this Arsenal team

We’ve been here before with Arsenal and Chelsea players. The Gunners signed David Luiz back in 2019 and on the whole, he has been a success for the club. The signing of Willian hasn’t quite worked out, but there is time, and the Brazilian might well come good.

Alonso would represent a smart signing for Arsenal, though. He knows the league well, plays well as a left-back in a four or as a wing-back in a five. That would suit Arsenal down the ground, given their change of shape at times this season.

Not only that, but Alonso has remained professional in battling Ben Chilwell for minutes. Thomas Tuchel has noted this about Alonso, calling him a ‘top professional’ and an ‘intelligent and calm guy’. That’s the sort of character this Arsenal team needs.

If Chelsea are willing to sell Alonso on the cheap, then the Gunners could do far worse than look to make their move here.
